9/26/07: Many of you remember my interview with Mr. A-Dot a couple of weeks ago. Well this time we chopped it up with him and his group, The 2-1 Click. The group is putting out a new mixtape called Can't Murda Me coming soon. This is a 2 part interview and this is part 1 which is a introduction to the group and how they got started. Part 2 will get in depth about the new mixtape. Hit up 2-1 Click at http://www.myspace.com/21cmusic for more music from the group.
D: How did you guys end up becoming a group?
A-dot: 2-1 click was originally me, Ace and another member named santiez. Dude wanted to go his way with producing and be a solo artist so in the end it was a two man group until my cousin J-luck joined the camp but just two months ago he called it quits. That's when we recruited our newest member Lil' Tex. It is what it is.
Ace: When I lived in Chicago, me and my boys used to freestyle and rap but it was nothing big. I moved out here a few years ago, I still had an ambition to do music. I felt like I had so much to say and not have anyone hear me out. I met up with A-Dot a little after i moved out here. Ever since then we've been doing our thing and laying it down in the booth.
Lil Tex:I met A-dot through some of my connects, and They said he rapped. We hooked up and chopped it up for a miinute. He told me he wanted to collab for his project "Ready For Testin'" and we did a joint called "poppin tags" a little bit later he hit me up for some mixtapes. He asked if I was interested in joining the camp.I obviously was or I wouldn't be sitting next to him right now[laughs]
A-dot:Yes Sir![laughs]
D: This question is for Ace and Tex. Who are your biggest influences in music and how did you get started in the game?
Ace: For me, one of my biggest influences has been Jadakiss. He's always been lyrical and speaks the truth. I've always liked his music. A new person I've learned to respect is Lil' Wayne. He's been in music for a minute but just until a couple of years ago, I really listened to his music. He's got some dope lyrics. I think that he is the best rapper as of now. He might be the best of all time but that's a bold statement.
Lil'Tex: I like gutta music.Petey Pablo,Mystikal.I like the legends 2pac and Biggie. My biggest Musical Influence is my cousin Shorty Black,He's my biggest motivator.
D: With a group, do you guys collaborate between each other on lyrics and songs or does each member bring in their parts and you put it together?
A-dot:We do all the above. Some days we'll all meet up at my crib, jot down lyrics and rehearse before the studio.Other days we'll just be at the studio,Feelin whatever Jordan[producer]has got on the boards.
Ace:It's both. Mostly we'll be at the crib though and the beat comes on. When we start vibing on it than the lyrics get jotted down.Other times we'll be at the studio and Jordan will throw on a beat while we waiting and we tell him "Lets get that one". Its all about the vibe and the mood though. Sometimes we want to get crunk but other times we want to wright mellow n relaxed. But whatever the mood, its always hot though.
Lil'Tex:Yeah that's how we do it man.Whatever comes to mind.I'm riding with these niggas man they the truth.I co-sign for both my niggas.
D: Tell me about the first mixtape you guys did together?
A-dot:Well to me it was real successful.250 copies?no radio play,no single,no guest appearences, before myspace,I think it turned out real well.Even when your selling them $3-$5 a c.d. That's at least over $700.Thats a whole 'nother project done financially. This mixtape is going to be bigger, more promotion,We have myspace, DJ's feeling us,We're even getting on Compilations.
Ace:We did our thing on the first mixtape."You Know", "Let me know", and "Lay you down" were some of my favorites. I still remember being at the studio doing those tracks. The chemistry was there throughout the whole mixtape. But it's always going to be better.
D: Was it more original production or industry beats or a mixture of both?
Ace: It was both. The majority was original though. Jordan produced most of the beats. He can make some hot beats. Its probably going to be alot of music between us and Prezicon in the future.
A-dot:Yeah big props to Jordan. He did his thing as far as production. But if you put a Industry beat on there for example "I get Money" by Fifty Cent. We'll fucking kill it.Make it hotter than the original.I think that's why everyone feels our shit.
D: How was the feedback after the first mixtape dropped?
A-dot: Man, it was real positive.89.3 KNON wanted to get a track on the radio, but when we told them it was mixtape and the beat wasn't original they didn't holla. It's all good,we're still keeping in touch so when something original pops and they're feeling it, we'll be good to go.
Ace: yeah i think I heard a DJ from another station shout us out saying our tape was hot.I mean it's a good feeling knowinw people feeling your shit.
Lil Tex:"Can't Murda ME!" man this is going to take our click to another level! the feedback will be bigger!
A-dot: You wasn't even here the first run b!
Lil Tex:That's why it's going to be bigger!!
All:[laughs]
D: Ha, you a fool for that one. Other than A-Dot, is there solo albums or mixtapes in the works for Ace or Lil Tex?
Ace: As for now, its about the mixtape. I like doing mixtapes. But I definately want to get a solo album out in the future. Right now it's about the collaborations and the group thing, the solo album will be out later though. Have to wait for that one.
Lil'Tex:Yeah hopefully a solo will be in the future.I have to talk to The Boss A-dot,You know he C.E.O. and everything[luaghs]
A-dot:[sings] boy you know what it is!
all:[laughs]
This is only part one people. Keep it locked as part 2 we get into the making of the mixtape, the group favorite tracks, and alot more to keep it locked.
