The Airamis Exclusive

We are sitting here with Airamis…

Interview: Airamis is an interesting name. Do you know what the meaning is behind that?

Airamis: I just checked it out and I thought it was cool (laughs). It is pronounced AIR-a-miss. An Israeli name, meaning- father of a multitude, notable for his ambition and religious aspirations.

Interview: How did you earn the nickname “the big man with the big plan?”

Airamis: “The big man with the big plan” came in 2007. At an award show, I was nominated for three different categories – “best R&B male artist”, “best hip-hop male artist” and “best soul male artist.”  This was for the BMA awards…. I went to the after party and all the nominees and winners were there, Lenny Williams was performing that night. At the spur of the moment, he had come off stage and asked me to sing a little something. The only thing that came to my mind was “the big man with the big plan” so I started throwing little ripples on there, because I am the big man with the big plan. The crowd went up on it and I started doing a little bit of singing. People caught onto that and later on people called me that - - and rightfully so because that’s Airamis. Not only am I big in stature, but my plans are always big, so we officially took that on and kept with it.

Interview: You spoke on some of your award nominations, which we will get a chance to speak on later. First off, how would you describe your overall sound of music?

Airamis: I would say my sound of music is R&B, with a splash of Hip-Hop and soul. I call it R&B-Hip-Hop-fusion, with a bold taste of soul. It’s just kind of all mixed together, but I have my own unique sound. I just call it the Airamis sound, because I’m not really trying to sound like anybody else, although I have great influences like the great Michael Jackson, who played a great influence in my life. I grew up on Michael Jackson and may he rest in peace of course. He was a great influence and a dynamic artist as well as many others such as Stevie Wonder, Brian McKnight, R. Kelly, Boyz 2 Men, Jodeci and so on. I’m influenced by singers, because I’m a singer. I can spit… rap a little bit but the main thing I do is sing. I try to stick to myself and I come from my heart so the people can feel it.

Interview: “R&B-Hip-Hop-fusion”, I like that, it’s crazy! How did you come up with it?

Airamis: I was talking to my manager and I was trying to put it in words. I said R&B-Hip-Hop-fusion with a bold taste of soul. We just fused it together and called it that because we want to touch the spirit, soul, and body of our fans.

Interview: Michael Jackson was a great influence on your life and music. Where were you at the time of his death and how did you find out?

Airamis: Oh my God man. At the time of his death, ironically I was at home checking my emails. I’m on there and I got to see the front page basically saying when it happened that he just collapsed; that’s the first thing I heard. I just said I hope he’ll be ok, so I grabbed the remote and turned my TV on. They said he was being rushed to the hospital and I was praying for him to be alright because it was crazy. Before I could get into a real good prayer, they announced he was dead and I was shocked. I said not Mike! He to me was the greatest artist of all time as far as I am concerned. He put everything into his craft, and is a great example of that.

[Michael Jackson] was my role model as far as work ethic and talent… I was just flabbergasted when I heard that he died. I know he’s in a better place right now. Shouts out and much love to his family. He definitely will be missed, but he won’t be forgotten for sure. I try to live my life by putting that work ethic into my music in honor of him and all those who go before me. I try to represent.

Interview: I know you said you don’t like to be compared to anyone but with such a unique sound, I’m curious and just got to ask, if you had to compare yourself to somebody, who would you choose and why?

Airamis: Ok if I had to compare myself to somebody, I would take Notorious B.I.G. as far as his swagger, R. Kelly as far as his flow, put them together and there you go (laughs). It’s kind of like that.

Interview: That’s a good combination. Tell our readers about being an ASCAP award winning songwriter.

Airamis: As far as the ASCAP deal, I’m a songwriter. I wrote this song, called “Well Done Soldier, Welcome Home”, and it’s not R&B or Hip-Hop. I write all types of songs like jingles, country, inspirational, etc. I wrote a couple of jingles for some hotels here in Las Vegas. I write many different styles. This song was more of a patriotic song and it’s for all the veterans of war - - Vietnam veterans that didn’t get the fair welcome home that they deserved. I was moved by that, which lead me to write a song for them and I dedicated it to them with honor and tribute. The song has been downloaded so many times… I believe it’s at half a million downloads; I gave it away for free to begin with to all the veterans of war. ASCAP gave me an award for best patriotic song of the year, when it first came out and I’ve been able to perform that song for the veterans all over the United States. I even performed it for President Clinton… This song has been heard in 80 different nations in the world. The song is still going strong and I still sing it whenever they come to town with the national convention; they always have me come out and perform it.

Interview: In addition to all of that, you’re also a two-time American Black Music Award nominee and known in over 80 countries. Describe to us your international notoriety.

Airamis: I’m so humble for the fact that people are touched so much by the song that I know God inspired. People just play that song all over the world… Also, as far as internationally, I‘m signed to a record label in Sweden. We’re going to be marketing in Europe, China and Japan and basically, just the world in general.

Interview: You’ve brought up what I want to touch on. You’re signed to Maynea Records out in Sweden. How did that came about?

Airamis: It came about through hard work and determination and the situation with Maynea just fell in my lap. What happened was, I was hustling and grinding with the music. I was out here on the mic and staying online with places like MySpace, and everything. I wasn’t even on Twitter at the time, because it didn’t exist. I was getting my music out and creating a fan base. I was performing at different places, anywhere I could. I performed for free, even just to get my name out there - - constantly working day and night. I was over-doing it and staying busy by building a fan base on MySpace. As far as the label, they found me on MySpace near the top of the charts in Nevada when they looked on the Nevada charts. They liked that song and they said they wanted to hear a little more of me. That was at the beginning of 2008 around February to be exact. Pretty soon, after that, they came out here to America and we went in the studio.  We dropped like four tracks and they signed me… The rest is history.

Interview: Speaking of hearing songs, your Hot new single “In the Zone” (Sexy Girl) just became available on iTunes recently. Tell our readers about that and the song in general.

Airamis: It just became available on iTunes and most major online stores. I’m so happy to announce that. It’s like a party song, hype single and a straight up club banger. It’s for the grown and sexy. You got to be in the zone sexy girl. The idea behind this is that I’m the big man with the big plan. I’m everyday on the hustle and grind, just working making that money, because I’m trying to pay these bills and do what I got to do. I went to the club after a hard week of stacking money and working - - and all of a sudden I see this sexy female and she’s doing her thing. She’s really getting into pop, locking and dropping if you want to say that, and she gets me in the zone. My Brothers can relate to being in the club and a lady gets you in the zone. It makes you forget your troubles and you have a good time that night, without the regular life distractions, You just get in the zone. You got to have fun and forget about work; it’s time to play. That’s what it’s about and I personally believe it’s a great song. I hope that the people will like it.

Interview: Ajami produced the song.  Tell us more about him?

Airamis: He’s a great producer and he is down to earth. He’s a perfectionist and I like dealing with people that are perfectionists, because they bring out the best in me. He’s unique and extremely talented and he pays attention to all the details in music… He is ahead of his time and he takes pride in what he does. He’s done a lot of work and he’s worked with people within Warner Brothers. I believe that he can easily be compared to the other great producers, both past and present in the industry. He’s an all around good man, with a good character and he brings a lot of love to his work. I love working with him and we both bring out the best in each other.

Interview: What project is the track set to be featured on?

Airamis: As far as the track, right now we’re working on the album. We have about 6-7 joints put together so far. We’re working on that right now, trying to get a few more features to put this album together. We haven’t come up with the actual name of the album yet… I will let you all know soon.

Interview: What’s next up for Airamis?

Airamis: Right now, we are just working on getting the word out more. We want to get out this single and video to the world. I have the video available on my MySpace and on YouTube, so make sure you check for that… Director, McKinley of McKinley Presents did the video. After this single, we’re putting out my hot joint called “American Top Model.” We are also working on putting together some tours, so keep up with me, as I’ll be coming to your city here very soon.

Interview: Y’all got the official word right here! Airamis has the video coming out real soon with the follow up single “American Top Model” coming right after that. Do you have any last words before l let you go?

Airamis: Shouts out to all the fans because I’m truly a believer in fans and appreciating them. Everybody says that, but that comes from my heart. Without the fans, we know none of this could be possible. That’s why I do what I do. I keep my music for the fans and take feedback from them. I want to give them something that they can enjoy, because at the end of the day it is all about them. I want to thank you for doing an interview with me and I appreciate the respect in it, for taking the time to do this with me… I don’t take things granted. Big ups to you and everybody reading this right now. Hey, it’s the big man with the big plan with big love coming at you.
