10/11/07: What up peoples, D-Marc back in the place to be with another interview. This time I conversated with rapper Blanca from Albuquerque, New Mexico. She is a up and coming mc out on the WESTSIDE and she just recently dropped a free mixtape called the 99 Cent Come Up on her myspace a while back. In this interview we talk about the new mixtape, her views on how ladies are treated in hip hop and so much more so check it out.
D: How did you get your start in the game?
B: My start in the game must have been the day I wrote my first rap verse. Everyone who heard instantly became a fan. That gave me motivation to continue to play the game, learn the game and live the game.
D: Who are your biggest influences in music?
B: I listen to EVERYTHING! I was influenced by music from Elvis Presley to Tupac, from Chalino Sanchez to Bronco, Too Short to T.I. to Grupo Limite to Sade, Mariah to Lauren Hill, LL Cool J to Weezy, Mc Magic to The Beatnuts, Sublime, South Circle, and oldies, I love oldies, classic rock and I like me some country too...
D: Being from New Mexico, what is the music scene like out there? I have been to Albuquerque many times but only for short stays.
B: Being from New Mexico its a lil different, not as much as most people expect but there isn’t enough action yet, record labels, or other opportunities that surface in L.A everyday!
D: Being a woman in a male dominated profession, what obstacles have you had to face and what advantages do you feel you have? Not many Chicana or Latina women in the hip hop game right now.
B: Being a woman in a male dominated profession, the obstacles aren’t so different as that of a male except I have titties which can distract others professionalism while I’m on my business behavior sometimes I think if I was a male I wouldn’t have to deal with some of the bullshit ...We should learn from their mistakes and represent ourselves as who we really are and not what they want us to be, because as women, we are just as strong and talented, we need to lead our own way...I work hard to keep my business respected. There is a lot of females out there working hard to be acknowledged. My plan is to take advantage of my opportunities so in the future I can set up more opportunities for hard working people like me being a female It can work for me or against me, but people who know me respect me for what I do and how I do it Male or female.
D: Well put. Respect goes a long way. How do you feel about Chicano and Latino representation in hip hop and if you have problems with it how do you feel it can be better than what it is.
B: I am very proud we represent! Its what keeps our traditions alive. I do think its time to release the “New Mexican” which would represent the hard work and intelligence in our people the Americanized Mexican. We came here with a dream to succeed. Too often we are portrayed as cholos, gangsters, mobsters we can play everything else in the story too. We have evolved and become Great businessmen/women. Hard work pays off and the people I represent are proving it!
D: Amen to that! (laughs) What was the big break that got you where you are
today?
B: My big break was moving to Califas! I came here on a mission and that’s what it’s been since! I build professional relationships, take advantage of my opportunities to romance my fans, whether it be in the studio, on stage or the internet, the work I put in comes from my heart, so I reach the hearts of those I work with and together we create the realism to my dreams, which to me, is the best break of my life!
D: You recently dropped your mixtape, The 99 Cent Come Up on your myspace page for free. I copped it and I liked the tape. You rocked beats from Top Billin to Lloyd
Banks. How has the reception been for the mixtape?
B: People are saying they’re digging my styles, swagger and flows but some are a bit technically challenged when it comes to downloading the zipped Mix Tape and opening it, so it hard to quantify right now with our downloads but the page comments are strong. We’re re-uploading the mix tape so you can download it by individual tracks. This will make it easier to cop it and it will be easier for us to quantity our hustle.
D: Are you going to follow up this one with another mixtape or is the album coming up next?
B: I am following up with another Mixtape, which will include some of my favorite dirty south m.c’s. I also am working on a Mixtape with producer Domingo. Its entitled Classic Rock En Espanol Mixtape / C.R.E.E.M.. this is def. cool! Hard Ass spanish Spit on some Classic rock tracks!
D: Speaking of the album, without giving away too much, tell me about it and are you close to being done with it?
B: My words on the album.... Building Anticipation!! I’ve got a secret project I’m working on... I cant tell you what it is cause I’d have to kill you..lol... but I’m always working on something.. Whether it’s in the studio recording or working on my dance moves, brushing up on my skills, coming up with new ideas for the world to fall in love with me!! I keep it moving! With out a release date!
D: Definitely looking forward to the album. Are you currently touring or doing shows or have any planned?
B: October 3rd was my birthday so I gave them a piece of my birthday cake!!! I rocked the house at a lil joint in South Whittier...I got Lots of Love! Looks like I’ll be on the same stage as Too Short.. real soon!
D: What do you feel like is missing from hip hop right now?
B: What I feel is missing from Hip Hop? LOL! My Album. A female bilingual lingo rhyming un chingo!!! New Flava, Sexy with a conscious edge. Chingona, I’m in the game.. I’m here... you see me you hear me! but where’s it at? In the oven baking!! Preparing the game for the highlight of its life... cause when it drops it’ll be a new life, a new light, a new cool, a new way to look at right. Too much of the same shit, take a whiff of my hit, you can smell it from a distance to keep u hooked on my persistence!
D: Well that is all from me. Shamless promo time. Last words, shout outs?
B: Pura Locura in the House.. shots out to you for doing what you do and everybody who contributes in any way to artists on the grind. Peace to my familia in Burque, NM and all my fans around the world...I LOVE U!
