The DJ DJ Interview

By: Justin Melo

So, is Destin “DJ DJ” Jackson the future? This confident 10-year-old rap artist from Atlanta sure does think so with his debut album coming soon called “Wii The Future.”

Presently, and through late December DJ DJ — Also known as “Futuristic Shawty” — is touring, while also shooting a television reality show pilot. The reality show takes a look at this young future star’s life while he juggles school, touring, and being in the studio, as well as showing some of the celebrity hip-hop artists that he is in contact with.

Read below the interview with DJ DJ as we talk about the past, present and future of his career in hip-hop.

Interview: We are sitting here with DJ DJ! How are you doing at this time bro?

DJ: I’m doing good; I got a lot of good stuff going on. We just came up with a new song; you know what I’m saying? We have a new song coming up that we’re about to drop. In the studio getting it in.

Interview: Ok, no doubt. What’s the name of the song you guys just came up?

DJ: “The World is Mine.”

Interview: And what type of stuff are you talking about in “The World is Mine?”

DJ: You’ll see!

Interview: Ok, trying to keep it under wraps, I like that. When do you think the song

will be released?

DJ: Probably next week; it will be on a few mix tapes.

Interview: Are you shooting a music video in the coming weeks or anything like that?

DJ: We’re getting the treatment for the video done now; we’re getting all the covers and

everything ready so we can shoot it.

Interview: Is the song “The World is Mine” the video your going to be shooting?

DJ: No, it’s for the first single off the album “She Like My Swag.”

Interview: Are you working on any upcoming projects at this time?

DJ: Yeah, we’re working on the album. We have about 4-5 songs to do and will be finished.  We’re also working on a movie something big, something nice, and something futuristic.

Interview: What’s the name of the album?

DJ: The name of the album is “Wii the Future.” It’s Wii, like the Nintendo Wii.

Interview: Is that because you like the Nintendo Wii? How did you guys come up with

that?

DJ: It just looks hot to me like that you know Nintendo is the future of video games and

I’m the future of hip-hop…

Interview: Ok. Are you signed to any record label at this time? How is the album gonna’ come out?

DJ: It’s gonna’ come out, but first I have a tour coming up. We’re going to a lot of places and will be playing in front of 60,000 people. We’re going to Birmingham, Tennessee,

Mississippi, South Carolina, North Carolina, Alabama and so on. We’re gonna’ get out and have some fun. It’s gonna’ be big.

Interview: When are you starting the tour? Do you have a date?

DJ: It goes from October 31 to December 7.

Interview: Ok, you’re in the midst of that. As for the album, do you have a release date in place? Alternatively, are you worried about the tour first off?

DJ: The album is coming out in 02-23- 2010.

Interview: Which producers do you work with?

DJ: Slim Money and Brand New

Interview: Can the fans expect to hear any guest appearances on the album?

DJ: It’s just me on every song. I do all the work. I want the fans to get to know me first then I [will] start doing all that.

Interview: At ten years old, how old were you when you realized you could rap and make money off it?

DJ: When I came up with a song called “She likes my Swag” and I started performing it

at all the open mics in Atlanta. The city gave me so much love, I knew it was on.

Interview: Listening to hip-hop and what not, who would you say were some of your

influences to begin rapping?

DJ: Well the people around me. Slim Money, Pops Da God, Chop and the Corner Boyz.

Interview: What do you like about working with Slim Money?

DJ: He’s fly. He puts a lot of energy into his work and I put a lot of energy into my work. He books a lot of shows and stuff. He definitely helps our movement in a lot of different ways.

Interview: What is a normal day like in the life of DJ DJ?

DJ: I like to hang out with my friends. I also enjoy doing shows and listening to beats and

thinking of new song concepts.

Interview: Do you ever find it difficult to balance music and school?

DJ: No. When I’m in school; I get my schoolwork finished. I do my homework when I get

home. Then I just transform into a beat monster. It’s like when Peter Parker transforms to Spiderman. First, I’m a student, and then I’m just a monster for sure. I start listening to beats and coming up with new ideas.

Interview: At such a young age, how do you think it is that you’re able to come up with such ideas and concepts for songs?

DJ: Really, it’s just the things around me. It’s about what I hear; the new stuff and the old stuff. I take some of the new stuff and some of the old stuff and just combine it.

Interview: And obviously being ten years old, taking some of the old stuff you hear and put it into your music, do you think it’s important that you respect some of the old music and you don’t just keep it new school?

DJ: Yeah,I have to respect the old school to move forward its like history class but I keep it new. I don’t bite anybody else. If your tight and think of your own stuff and come up with it, it’s gonna’ be really fly. You gotta’ be yourself.

Interview: How can the fans check you out? Is there a MySpace or Twitter?

DJ: www.myspace.com/djdjwiithefuture  and we have Twitter, which is the same thing. The songs and performances are also on YouTube, if you type in the same thing. You can see me perform a few shows on there and see what I do and how I get down.

Interview: If you could work with one rapper or producer as a dream collaboration,

who would you pick?

DJ: I would probably pick Eminem. When you listen to his music, you hear a lot of energy

and his soul in his music. He’s a real good rapper.

Interview: They can see some of the shows on YouTube and what not; how do you like

performing?

DJ: I love it. I find performing very exciting. When you hear all of those people just

screaming, I love it. I might be nervous before the show but once I get on stage it’s on, I get energy from being in front of all these people. I go real hard and just get it done; and once I get it done, I just walk out with a mean look on my face. I just lose the nerves and do my thing on stage. When you think about getting on stage and you see all of those people, all I see is the mic and myself.

Interview: Ok. At ten, where does DJ see himself in the future?

DJ: I see myself owning my own label and being able to put other artist’s on.

Interview: Perfect! Thanks a lot for your time DJ, I really appreciate it. Do you have

any last words before I let you go?

DJ: Just watch out because I’m coming through. I’m a monster and I’m gonna’ eat everything in sight, keep it positive, and make hits.
