Illuminati 2G sat down with North Carolina artist Grimey for a interview. We discuss the rap game, his upcoming album, the art of MCing and much more so chilly chill and enjoy the convo.
Tell me about how you got your start in the rap game?
I used to freestyle here and there while in high school on the bus. While I was in basic training I wrote songs and I continued to freestyle some more. It wasn’t until I actually heard myself that I realized bow "BAD" it sounded. LOL! When I first recorded myself on a computer for the first time, and played it back I was like, "Damn, I sound like a demon or something!" That was why I never really attempted to brag about rapping. Nonetheless, I kept playing with it until I came up with a rhyming pattern that I felt comfortable with. Once I started to get comfortable with riding the beat properly, I just kept doing my thang.
Who are some of your biggest musical influences?
Just about everything from Bach, Ru Paul, Wu-Tang, the list could go on for quite a while. You’ve got to understand that I make beats too. I have to listen to various other samples aside from just Hip Hop tunes to get ideas as to how I would like to create my sound. I also used to play in band(clarinet), guitar, and piano. Although much of those musical talents didn’t really keep with me, it gave me a chance to gain a learning experience as to how I might want to carry myself as an artist.
What moment did you KNOW that being a MC was what you wanted to do?
As soon as I realized that my ability to write songs was starting to get better, I began wanting to do more with this than just making it a hobby, and to possibly make it somewhat of an actual career. Only problem is, nobody really wants to hear you unless you’re on the radio. Either that or you have to be like an internet sensation, know somebody, or be a relative to someone in higher places. Being on the grind has a lot to do with it too. You need to be able to show case what it is you do to people who are interested in your style. All I know is that I like wordplay, and I always have. With that said, I wanted to be able to express how dope I could possibly become by putting an effort into MCing.
What's up with the music scene out in North Carolina?
It’s still growing, in my opinion. There’s been a lot of great artist out of NC to really make us shine like crazy such as Supastition, Little Brother, Anthony Hamilton, Fantasia, "Grimey Tha Dude" ;) But I think we need to focus more on growing together so that we can assist each other with getting the word out. There is no real way to infiltrate the media machine unless you are determined to stick with your guns and work your way in until you get to where it is you want to be. In other words, don’t sell out. If you do happen to lose your way, remember where you came from, and always be willing to bring it back so that you can help those who were once where you used to be. A lot of folks get too big for their own egos, and once they get to the top it’s like "who are you?" Even though I’m not the most profitable rapper on earth, I enjoy writing songs and making beats. If I were to obtain a deal off of this belief, and not off of the latest new trend, I would be even more motivated to do what I do. But as an artist you also have to keep in mind that it’s all about how you go about getting your own music out, and the effect that it may have on people.
How would best describe your style?
I wasn’t even that hard on rap until I really got into listening to Wu-Tang, Killarmy, Killah Priest, etc. I used to rock an off beat sound for a hot minute. Once I started riding the track properly, I really smelled my own shit! But that comes with most MC’s. Like fine wine. You know the routine. My style is more rugged and somewhat straight to the point. As I mentioned earlier, I enjoy wordplay, so I might through in some subliminals here and there to get the audiences attention and make’em exercise their brains.
Tell me a little bit about the album. What can people expect from it.
Well if you’re looking for something repetitive, simple minded, has a catchy tune for you to make a dance to (even though I do somewhat like that kind of thing), this is not for you. However, if you’re into some good ole head noddin’, classic type Hip Hop, then I got what it is you’re looking for.
Who did the beats and who guest appears on the album?
The producers of this album consisted of Splash (you made of heard of him from an album he currently has out known as "The Ripple Effect"), my homeboy out of Durham, Currieman, Sep One, Black Genius, and myself.
Where can people cop the album?
CD Baby, Napster, Sno Cap, Apple iTunes, Great Indie Music, Music Is Here, and Next Hit. You can also hit me up with an email at my myspace page @.......................

What are your thoughts on the state of hip hop today?
This is like the question of the century right here! All I can say is, I enjoy and hate listening to the radio. I enjoy it because it is music, and it gives me an opportunity to hear what’s hot and new. The only problem is, sometimes it’s being played just a little too much for my taste buds. Also you have to keep in mind that I enjoy listening to cats who spit to an extent that I can ease back and actually jam to the wordplay. Flo Rida is dope when it comes to this. Cassidy, Little Wayne, Fat Joe, and so on. As long as I can rock to what you’re saying to the beat, it’s all good. But there are some joints that make me wonder whether or not we’re dumbing down to an extent of pure ignorance. I think it’s obvious what I mean by that……………………..
Any upcoming shows or tour dates?
For right now I’m really focused on family, and getting my personal assets together so that I can focus on music more than what I am currently doing. I miss going to the clubs, doing shows, meeting people, etc. So for now it’s on a hold until I relocate, and make sure that my baby daughter comes into this world safe and sound. Don’t get me wrong, I’m still going to continue to do my thang. Still, it’s no good feeding your family off of rhymes not sold.
Any last words or shoutouts?
Yea. First off, shoutout to you for giving me an opportunity to let loose on this interview. Also, bigups to everyone and anyone who has and continues to push ya boy as I keep doing my thing. Peace and love to all. One.
