One of my 2007 hip hop highlights, albums, etc.
In no particular order ...
UGK: Rest in paradise Pimp C. The double album was serious. Pimp C’s crooning was so soulful, so powerful. Earlier this year, I went out and bought Bun B's solo album, though a few years old, the album was sick for riding.
Legend of the Mask and the Assassin: DJ Muggs of Cypress Hill and Sick Jacken of Psycho Realm- Probably the best release in 2007. Ill production, conscious raw information and on a major label. Good to see artists use the major label machine and put out original music yet still pushing boundries with topics of conspiracy within governments who plot to kill the working man and woman. Musica Buena….
Bought some music from Vico C this year. An OG from Puerto Rico who has been around for a long time. I remember being outside of a TV studio in Costa Rica waiting to get interviewed and watching this video on the monitors.
Prodigy of Mobb Deep: You seen we pushing them videos out. All the new solo shit is fire. I don’t feel his comments about women but what I’ve related to with the Mobb was the darkness. So while hip hop beef grabs headlines, I’m a just focus on the music. Hey, Prodigy stabbing up a
couch and the couch bleeding, shit is sick. His new one, “ABC,” he throwing a TV into a reptilian enemy. Savage…..HNIC2.com….That’s his new site, can’t believe he getting locked up.
I’m So Hood Remix, DJ Khaled: The artists come with it, but it’s the beat that kills it. Illest beat all year. Produced by the Runners, who I believe produced Rick Ross’ Hustlin song.
Cartel de Santa: Dope group from Mexico that I’ve been feeling.
Kemo the Blaxican’s video for Kind Of Stories is tight, peep the cameo.
The Game, Live at the House of Blues in Orange County-Downtown Disney I didn’t have enough money to pay so the unnamed homie had a way to roll in for free, except it didn’t work.So we had to wait a few minutes and just walk in. Some got caught, but I made it in. The crowd was 90%
Mexicano, and all wearing red in honor of the Game? The best part was seeing Game down a bottle of tequila in one drink then deliver a song. With a live band bringing that sick ass bass, that was some raw hip hop.
YZ – Live in Houston, TX: An OG from ‘round 93 and before who penned some classics. Well recently I caught his show and it was tight. Raw delivery, conscious words, banging production. Peep his video and support the music, holmes.
Bone Thugs and Harmony: I like their newest album “Strength and Loyalty.” Traditional B.T.H. song murdering, no madness about sex and other stale topics, just griminess that they known for.
KRS One – Live in Orange Co., Cali: He killed it. In the crowd, going through song after song after song. Good presence of course, sincere words to the crowd and the fact that we opened for him, De La Soul and Black Sheep that night will go down in the memory banks. I handed him a CD and he said, “ who is this?” It was funny.
Chamillionaire- All them videos I posted up before. Homie putting out truth on a major label. I like that.
Young Jeezy- That production does it every time so it was easily to ride through the “ worst block in Houston” with this bumping. Jeezy came out with a lot this past year.
Ghost Face Killah-Live on Sunset Blvd, Hollywood, CA: With the Theodore Unit in effect, he had like 6 back ups. Everyone knew their stage position and would change up in unison during the songs, running in a circle in stage, that show was tight. Then GFK brought out a chair and just delivered the song at the edge of the stage in the chair. We went on right before GFK. After our set, we went outside and chiefed, then back inside in time for Ghost Face and that was a live ass show.
