What up peoples! Jehuniko took the time out to conduct a interview with Masoul, a Japanese rapper out of Cali. In this interview, J chops game with Masoul about his influences, his views on politics, the state of hip hop and much more so check it out. Big ups to Jehuniko for this piece.
J: Where were you born and where do you dwell these days?
M: Born lyrics and fed beats LOL. A beautiful place called Sapporo, Japan. I believe that's where DJ Krush and Blue Herb is from. Raised in Cali-For-Ni-A! Torrance, Breezy City; the Southbay baby! Currently residing in Westminster, Big Saigon, yo. I'm a Global Sapien.
J: You seem like a resourceful hustler, tell us more about your background...
M: 28 years of Hiphop, 5 years of serious and graduate thesis, couple years in soulsearch abroad, add few more years in digital domain.7 years of charm school (handsome boy modeling) multiply couple more years of hard knox. Currently: full time adult status.
J: I heard some hip hop in Japanese a while back, it was banging..I've heard you flow in Japanese, that is hard, what is cracking in Japanese / Asian hip hop?

M: Word. We all heard Rap is dying, but Hiphop is ever strong worldwide, baby, including Asia and all that! Good lookin' on that track tho. That one's called "Anthem (feat. Lourdes Macavinta)"; Fans can cop that on iTunes (jus type in 'MasOul' in search bar) or ROCKSMITH's site if they're interested.
J: What I think is dope is that in your music, you'll throw in words in Spanish, English and Japanese which represents how diverse our world is and how tolerant we should all be to each other.
M: Fo'sho! ...and thanx for noticing LOL.
J: I seen you at our show with KRS/De La Soul, there you were selling a few releases...I had no idea you started a label...tell me more about that.
M: ROCKSMITH: www.RSrecordings.com
J: What are you putting out as a label, that will address Global issues worldwide?
M: Good question! Our stance as a label on this subject matter is that we strive to push 'awareness'; whether it be mind, soul or even 'body awareness' by making you move to our beat. So when it comes to global issues, any given artist from our label may touch upon it and raise its awareness through the power of music. There are so many issues: human rights, increasing peace, justice and proper compensation for workers/laborers/artists, healthcare and 'health in general' for all, liberation of the people, etc. I hope to address all of that, direct or artistically.
I think that after becoming 'aware', an individual ultimately have to make a choice for action. Some may choose to stay put as their choice of action. I like to believe most of us will stand. But information is very crucial for making the right choices, too. In a system where truth is scarce, empowerment must be sought; sometimes even declared. I believe that's how movements start.
J: Who are you listening to these days?

M: For Hiphop: The Alliance crew, Civil Savages, Casualty (of Kovert Live), Pro Logik, Sonny_B, MasOul (ofcourse, i gotta listen to 'my soul' lol), and Jehuniko. J.Dilla + DJ Soulscape instrumentals, too.
Folk/accoustic: Amy Kuney, Nam Ninja, Applesauce Tran, Angie Evans
Classical/composers: Camille Saint-Saëns (danse macabre)
J: What do you think about the Minute Men killing innocent people?
M: Killing innocent people is straight wrong. it's wack. But because every arguement has two sides to it, is it the system to blame or the people of minute men? Why do they do what they do? Useful information that propels a movement is so scarce on TV or the radio; the mass media in general. Yet the media has so much influential power. (I had to research the web to form an opinion.) Again, if there were a different kind of 'awareness' out there, perhaps, these men would take different action.
J: If you could perform for the President of United Snakes, whats the name of the song you'd do?
M: 'Pssssh', 'Give Peace a Chance (dedicated to the great late)', or
'Your Dayz are Up'. Thanks for interviewing me, man! Good lookin' out and Big Ups!
