L.I.F.E. Entertainment/Chocolate Mommi artist Lady L.U.S.T. dropped her album, The Ms. Ceily Complex about a month ago. Many of you will recognize her from our coverage on her album and the singles she has had out and her work on the album. How does the album size up? Well check out our review and decide for yourself.
1. The Validation (Intro): Album starts off with a very nice beat and Lust going in on it. This is a great intro that really showcases her lyrical prowess on the mic.
2. Listen Close Featuring Omega Rae: Dap Daniel produces this smooth track. One thing that almost immediately strikes me about this album is the vintage hip hop feel it has. This album could have easily come out in the 90's and fit right in. Not to say that it sounds dated, but it's very live and organic. Back to the track, Lust gives the listeners a journey into her life as a MC and what makes her who she is. Great track and Omega Rae nails the hook.
3. Where U R Featuring Duwop Rose The Vinylist: Poetiq on the beat, remember that name because he does alot of production on this album. I had the pleasure of hearing this song without the scratches added by Duwop Rose and it was a smash before but with it added, it really gives the song that classic vinyl sound. This song is getting steady burn out here in Vegas and is one of the lead singles. Lust shows her social commentary on this one. Love this song.
4. Ms Ceily Complex: Poetiq once again crafts the beat for the title track and Lust gives you another glimpse into her life and whats shapes her life and her music. Very personal album. Another incredible beat, the production is definitely a strong element to this album.
5. Grab The Mic featuring Rideout: This song makes me wish I have dreads lol. This is a HYPHY BANGER. Classic Q-Tip sample, Rideout sets it off with the intro and Lust goes in on the E Sharp melody. I have yet to see someone not get to grooving once they hear this song.
6. Childish Things (Interlude): Cool interlude into the next track
7. Grown Folks Hip Hop Featuring Issac Sawyer: Poetiq on the beat, with a cold ass harp loop, very uptempo. The title sums up what the track is about, just some very mature MC shit. Lust and Issac go back and forth on this banger.
8. Cupcake: The man of the hour on the boards, Poetiq is back again lol. I would say this song is probably one of the all time favorites from everyone. Lust vividly describes a night of passion and for the rest you need to listen for yaself lol.
9. Keeper Of The Flame Featuring Poetiq & Kandi Cole: Another incredible beat from Poetiq, almost sounds like something Wu Tang would rap over with the Nina Simone sample. Lust once again is verbally commanding on this, along with Poetiq and Kandi Cole.
10. Best Friend Featuring Nikki From Scene: E Sharp creates the musical landscape on this one, as this as to be my favorite track currently right now on the album. The beat almost sounds like something Snoop would rap over, has a Doggystyle session feel to it, can't explain it. Lust talks about her feelings in a relationship and what it means to her. Nikki KILLS the hook, this song is a personal classic for me, one of the best songs I have heard all year, anywhere.
11. The Proposition Featuring Artikulate: If the 1st half was the smooth part, now we getting into a little bit of the lyrical rage Lust has. Even the primal screams on the hook let you know it is on. Poetiq is on the beat, and Lust talks about being a lesbian woman and the prosecution that she has endured. The 3rd verse she GOES IN:
What have we here, verse 3 I presume/this is the realest song since death of autotune/I hope this be the death to all the hating in the room/death to all the stereotypes that you assume/death to all the judgements, you can't talk on my fate/death of all the ignorance that made you vote on Prop 8.
It is not a condemning or preachy song, you almost feel like Lust is saying look enough is enough, this is who I am and whether you accept me or not, I am still God's child. Get past the ignorance and build. I don't think yall is ready for Lust to take ya to church this evening!
12. God Is A Woman: Lust absolutely murders this Dap Daniel beat. This track is raw, lyrical, rage filled, thought inspiring, hip hop wrapped into 3 minutes. If you did not think Lust was one of the illest, you will after you hear this, PERIOD.13. Come Get It: Easily my favorite E Sharp beat on this album. The piano keys and prodding bass blend smoothly with the sinister melody and once again Lust does lyrical surgery to this song.
14. Baby Girl To A Boss: DJ Daryl on the beat and this one has that 70's soul feel to it. Lust talks about her personal growth on this song. Just a cold ass song, as the 2nd half of this album really showcases Lust's lyrical strength and storytelling.
15. Generational Curse: Poetiq creates another incredible beat. The great thing about this album is that it has a very universal sound. You can't pigeonhole it as just a west coast album, because it has such a fresh, unique sound that alot of people would not associate with the west. It is really just a sonically great sounding album. This song reminds me a little bit of Warning from Biggie. The story told by Lust captures you. That is all you get from me on this track, check it out.
16. Ain't No Featuring Angelo Luster: Poetiq closes out the album with a soulful beat. The piano at the beginning draws you in and Angelo Luster, Lust's brother, plays the saxaphone as well. The sax really adds the perfect element to this track, as Lust dedicates this song to her mother. This song really brings the album to a crescendo, as she talks about all the influential women in her life. Incredible track.
Overall, I am not just saying this because I have the pleasure of knowing Lust, but it is one of the best albums I have heard in a couple years. It really has everything, storytelling, lyrical gems, emotion, rage, partying, love, pain, you can't help but be drawn into it. Also one of the coldest produced albums I have heard in a long time. L.U.S.T. stands for Last Undisputed Spit Truth, she proves on this album that she has a fair claim to that. Hit up www.askaboutlust.com to pick up a copy of one of the best albums in recent years.
