REC WORM INTERVIEW 8/21/07

Jehuniko: The homie at Fourth Cycle vouched for him early on and in a short amount of time, Rec has earned my respect for always having positive vibes, a solid work ethic, a worldly wisdom and recording with him is efficient, crisp and solid.

J: Your sister is a clothing designer, your brother is a dj, what was your childhood like and where did you
grow up?

RW: My childhood was good. Being the first generation in our family to grow up in the US it took some time for me and my siblings to adjust...but it wasn't hard. My parents worked hard elevating from one job to the next and always supported us in whatever we did. I was born in Cebu, Phillipines, came to Reno, Nevada at the ageof  4, and moved to Anaheim, CA at the age of  7 where I spent most of my life....Now I live in Echo Park, LA, next to some beachfront property in a third world country.

J: You come from a creative family, what are your parents like?

RW: My Dad fed us with Jazz, My mom is the best cook in the entire world...i'll put money on it! They were always supportive.

J: How long have you been doing shows and what do most lack when it comes to live shows?

RW: I've been rockin shows for the past 8 years for venues consisting of thousands to a crowd of ten. What people lack? ....hmmmm, I'd say being innovative. I want to see something never been done....and i'm trying to build my next wave of shows to come at an angle that's fresh and brand new to someone like me who goes to shows all the time.

J: I know you travel alot, what is 1 place that left an impression on you musically and why?

RW: I would have to say New York. It just such a big melting pot of all cultures that the music you ingest there comes from all angles. You catch so many talented musicians in the subway, on the street, andin random hole in the wall bars.

J: The mic, turn tables, producing, engineer, which vice do you turn to more?

RW: Right now I'd have to say engineering. I go through phases. Its like I have ADD or something. I always gotta write a rhyme here and there though just to let it out, it is therapy, and I will never stop. I do feel like "rappin" is startin to not be so special anymore with the 400,000 emcees plaguing the internet, which is probably why I feel special being an engineer, not too many are all about it.

J: What do you think about Serato?

RW: You know, for a while I didn't really like it, but you cant stop technology. I still respect a dj more who is spinning vinyl as opposed to a laptop, but I think Im gonna get serato for the ease of
convenience, but I will NEVER sell my records! Any laptop dj's selling there records should get at me.

J: What's up with your album, where can people get it?

RW: Six months ago I put out somewhat of a compilation with tracks that Ive been involved in called "Rec Da Tech". Very limited press, those who have it should feel special. The next album is in the works and i'm very proud of the tracks I have for it. This is the ONE!

J: What were you up to before going away to New York for school?

RW: Rockin mic's whenever possible, getting over my ex-girlfriend. Ha.

J: I know you mastered Ikuestion's album, tell me some things about levels and sound quality and how did your schooling influence your ear?

RW: Ikuestion's album was one of my first projects coming out of school. The album sounded good already so it wasn't difficult. I wouldn't say school influenced my ear, but more gave me the knowledge to take a recording to wear my ear feels it should be.

J: What do you do for the Pharcyde and tell me about their current projects?

RW: I am the Pharcyde's in house engineer. They bring me in during recording sessions and mix downs. I'm currently mixing down Imani's next solo album titled "Blaquestardust", the next Pharcyde DVD, and tracking for the next Pharcyde album, hopefully mixing down as well. I've been a fan since the get goand feel really lucky to work with them today.

J: You also work for National network SiTV, what do you do there?

RW: I work in their digital media department. My department is dope, they call me Recworm at work. There all about what I do with music and I don't have to keep it separate, a luxury I never had at other jobs. They're putting the spotlight on artists who don't get enough of it.

J: Who are you listening to and what is the last cd you bought?

RW: Right now i'm really diggin the new Beastie Boys album, the Blu and Exile album, and my own album that everyone should cop once its done! Honestly I haven'tbought a cd in a while, I do buy records though, the last one I bought was a funk compilation from Ubiquity Records.

J: Who has been your biggest musical influence?

RW: Bob Marley.

J: Whats next for Rec.Worm?

RW: The new album which is untitled as of yet, but keep your ear to the ground.
