Check out I2G’s exclusive interview with Zerzsez.
I2G is here with Zerzsez, how’s it going?
Hey I2G! It’s going pretty well! How about yourself? Thank you for showing interest in my music! This is technically my first music interview so I am pretty humbled.
Doing great, thanks for asking. Tell me a little bit about how you got your start in hip hop and who are some of your musical influences out there coming up.
I grew up listening to a lot of funk and hip hop music. I always knew that I wanted to try to create my own music and in college I just went for it. I wrote my first song back during my last semester of college at UW-Platteville in 2003. I friend’s dad was a music professor there, so I attend his classes as an independent study. I would record and make beats in my dorm between classes just for fun and then play them in my friend’s car. The rest is history!
I definitely have many different influences. One of my main influences is from Timbaland’s whole Supafriendz crew from back in the day, Missy, Aaliyah, etc because of their unique sound that they had created. I also really like the old school productions by Teddy Riley. Besides those, I also really like some George Clinton, Prince, and even Dokken!
What projects do you currently have in the works?
I just recently released my new 6 track self titled project – Zerzsez – EP last week on 7/22/16 that I’m pretty excited about! This new cd includes 5 new tracks and also a re-release of my song “Dreadlock Anthem” that was a digital only release prior to this. I recorded and mixed the entire album in my music room in my apartment. I also did all of the photography as well.
Do you have any upcoming videos?
I do have a couple of things in the pipeline that I’m currently working on that haven’t been announced yet. Stay tuned!
What are your current thoughts on hip hop in 2016?
To be honest, I’m a 90’s kid at heart, so my playlists are full of tons of old school 90’s hip hop. There is a lot of really good hip hop music out currently in 2016, however there is also a lot of music that sounds the exact same. I am pretty open minded, so I’m always trying to find new artists and music in general that I can try to relate to. For my own music, I really try to write songs that the average person can relate to in their own life. I also like to musically try to do things that I’ve never tried before with my sound while also still keeping it unique.
With my newest single, Energy Vamp (Remix), I wanted to write song about people who are just energy vampires. You know, the ones who are always negative, always trying to drain you of your good vibes. A long exposure to energy vamps can have a very toxic effect on a person. It was a topic that I had never really heard of previously in any music, and I wanted to write about that! Anyone can relate to this because I’m sure most people have had to deal with their fair share of energy vamps in their lives. This song can be considered an anti-bullying song as well.
Do you have any shows or tour dates?
I’m definitely looking into a couple of options, however nothing is confirmed as of yet! I definitely would love to perform live. Make sure to follow me on social media to stay up to date!
What is your website information?
Appreciate the interview, any last words or shout outs?
I’d like to give a shout out to my mother Loraine for always having my back. Shout out to all my friends in Green Bay, WI including Andy, Andrea, and Cory who turnt up with me at the album release last week. Finally, a shout out to anyone who took the time to listen to my music! Remember to keep going after what you want in life. Thank you!
