Check out our exclusive interview with Certified Outfit.
I2G is here with Certified Outfit, how’s it going?
Church: Life is good.
Swindle: Everything is beyond great. We’re real excited about life and the brand that we’ve created.
Tell me a little bit about how you got your start in music and who are some of your musical influences out there coming up.
Church: I started out rapping over whatever music we were listening to at the time. Then the most prominent DJ in the city at the time, a cat named GMS, gave me my first original beat and I started actually making full songs. Production wise, I started producing out of necessity because nobody around had beats.
Swindle: I got started out in Hayward,California in middle school with a couple other partnas doing talent shows and battling after school. Oakland had a heavy rap influence nationwide and especially on the homefront. Artists that heavily influenced me were Too short, Richie Rich, Ice Cube, E-40, Mac Dre, Ice-T, Scarface, 415 and Easy E. You get the picture.
You recently dropped your video “Down 2 Ride”. Tell me a little bit about the video and how it came together for you.
Church: We scouted out some locations in Seattle. Then the homie Sonny flew out from Dallas. We got some drank, some girls, some lolo’s and just turned up for the camera.
What upcoming projects do you have in the works?
Church: We’ve got a mixtape called “Bulletproof Love” and an album titled “The Outfit 2”. The second project is the sequel to one of our bigger albums and the one that changed our handle from just Certified to the Certified Outfit brand of today.
What are your thoughts on the hip hop scene in Washington where you are from?
Church: There’s some real talent out here. I think if we came together more we’d have a better shot at national recognition but I’ve heard that same thing from cats all over so I ain’t worried. Our time will come.
Swindle: We’ve got alot of artists active out this way. Lotta people active. In Seattle we’ve got KaeOne, Nacho Picasso, Avatar, D Menace andYoung Soprano. Then we have Calley Reed from Tacoma. Nothing but certified work coming from the WashHouse.
What’s currently streaming on your playlist?
Church: When I’m in my car I’m riding out to some old school player shit. I mean artists Lamont Dozier, David Oliver, Bunny Sigler, etc.
Swindle: You can catch me zoning out to some Jay-Z, Nipsy Hussle, YG,Yo Gotti, Meek & Ross, Currensy and many others. I keep things well assorted.
Do you have any upcoming shows or tour dates?
Swindle: We have a regional tour with other local artists in 2016 dubbed The WashHouse Tour. Stay in tuned to Certified Outfit’s social accounts for updates pertaining to that.
What is your website info for people wanting to check out what you have going on?
Church: CERTIFIEDOUTFIT.COM is the website. We’ve got free music downloads, videos, pictures and the whole nine on there. We’ve also got the Certified Outfit YouTube channel where we will be releasing a song every Friday through our weekly mixtape series, “Fish Friday”.
