Check out I2G’s exclusive interview with Crimdella.
Tell me a little bit about how you got your start in music and who are some of your musical influences out there coming up.
I’m the youngest of 7 and the age gap between me and my brother’s is significant so they grew up in the beginnings of the artform. One day I just decided to write a rap because I loved it so much and I haven’t looked back since. I think I was about 12 years old. My biggest influences are probably DMX, Jay Z, Eminem, Andre 3000 and Nas. As for newer artists I’m very inspired by Kanye West and Kid Cudi as well as the Kendricks and the J Cole’s.
You recently dropped your new EP entitled Bury Me In Gold Vol. 1. Tell me a little bit about the EP and how came together for you.
Well the title came to me at my father’s funeral. He was a very well respected activist and Pan Africanist and the funeral was so grand and you could see that he had touched so many people, when I go I want to have touched people like that. So I just thought, Bury Me in Gold and it stuck. However, it didn’t really come together until I met the producer MNDCFT, once I heard his beats I knew what direction I needed to go in. It’s also the reason why I use a photograph of him on the front cover.
Your video for Extra is one of the best videos I have seen this year. How did the concept for the video come about?
Honestly I wanted something that was just as crazy and dissonant as the song is. I met Ping Wang through my good friend David Choi who is also a video and photography guy and we sat down and just brain stormed. Eventually we came out with the final project. It was really just little pieces of ideas that came together as a whole from the candle light vigil at the end to the projector scenes to the ghost like beginning.
Do you have any other upcoming projects?
Right now I’m focusing on promoting the project but I’m also working on completing a project with my collective “Black God Pantheon” called Zamunda. Not to mention I’m working on pulling together a remix for Extra and I have a 9 song project almost completed in the stash as well as ideas for Bury Me in Gold Vol. 2.
