2/12/07: Check out my interview with Yung Felony. She talks about thoughts on the rap game, 2pac, women in the rap game and much more. So sit back and enjoy the interview. To check out her music hit up her myspace at http://www.myspace.com/youngfelony .
D: How did you get started into the rap game?
YF: One day, I decided to send one of my tracks over to my friend DJ PIMP who is connected with Mike Mosley and a bunch of other people in the industry. DJ PIMP thought the track was tight. And from there he sent it on over to Mike. They both have helped me build my confidence in this music business. What a lot of people don’t know is that I write all of my songs and mix everything down. I also just started making my own beats.
D: You mentioned on your myspace page that 2pac is a big influence on you. Same here, I mean I am not a rapper or anything, but his trials and tribulations really inspire me along with the music. How does 2pac reflect in your music?
YF: Honestly, before anyone has ever heard any of my music I was being called lil Pac or female Pac. I just do me, ya feel. I guess its something about me that reminds people of Pac. And that’s a big compliment. I think it’s the realness that we both have. We know who we are, we know who we aren’t. We know what we can do, and we know what we can’t. And we’re not scared to tell the world about those things. And I mean anyone can do that? Ya know? But it has to be something special about you. The world can feel and recognize that you’re truly one of a kind.
D: You mentioned you have a mixtape out called Heart Of A Lion. What is the mixtape all about and tell people where can they pick it up.
YF: Yes, the mixtape has 18 tracks. This mixtape really is slept on. I passed most of them out for free to let people know how I come on the mic. I don’t even remember how many I sold. But it wasn’t that many. I’ve been doing this music thing for awhile and my pockets aint fat yet. All that means is that im not rapping just for the money. And I think that’s a really good thing. The mixtape can be picked up on my myspace page. www.myspace.com/youngfelony. My 2nd mixtape is about to drop also its called “Waiting to Exhale.” there’s some really hot songs on this one as well.
D: Are you signed to anyone and are you working on a album right now?
YF: I’m currently not signed. And yes I have an album in the works!
D: What advice would you give a singer or rapper wanting to get into the industry?
YF: Don’t let anyone change your mind and thoughts about what you feel are right. Go to God about everything, he’ll give you direction. Do whatever you gotta do to get heard and seen. And don’t be scared.
D: Being a woman in the rap game, do you find it difficult to be heard and what would you like to see change about hip hop as far as women are concerned.
YF: Yes, I really do find it hard for women in this rap game to be taken seriously. And I honestly don’t understand that at all. If men can listen to their wives and mothers. Then they should be able to listen to another strong woman whose giving the same type of advice or opinions. Women are women and men are men, fathers are fathers and mothers are mothers. You gotta understand each other to make any type of relationship work, why cant we do that with music? What am I saying that you don’t want to hear? The Truth?
D: Lyrically you bring the heat. Not your typical subject matter, you are talking about real emotions and issues. Do you feel like that is missing from the game?
YF: Thank you. But yes I really feel that its missing from the game. Theres no way in hell I can rap about things I don’t know about or I really don’t have. Some people make music for certain people. My music is emotional. im not just telling the world one side of my life. I’m sharing everything with you. And whoever relates to anything im saying then im doing my job. From hearing my words the person now knows that they arent the only one going through whatever it is that they are going through.
D: What artists or rappers are you feeling currently right now that are making good music?
YF: Snoop Dogg, of course. Once I meet him and lay some tracks down. The westcoast really will be back. I think that’s something people do not want to see. T.I is doing his thing I cant wait to work with him. Ciara, I like her confidence. She always comes tight. Beyonce too.
D: Well that is all from me. Any shoutouts?
YF: Everyone that is behind me, all my fans. And most importantly God , thanks for all the support. In the end it will all pay off.
